Where to Find Your Puppy

The best place to buy your Miniature Schnauzer is from a reputable breeder for several important reasons. A breeder is interested in producing sound and healthy dogs after having determined size, pedigree and temperament. Show puppies and pet stock come from the same litter and have benefited from the same care, feeding and medical attention. "I only want a pet" is no excuse for buying a "cheap" puppy from a person, newspaper, pet store, unregistered backyard breeder or puppy mill who is only exploiting the popularity of the breed at your expense. Remember that in New South Wales, all pure bred puppies must by law, come with a pedigree. In addition in most instances puppy will have commenced his/her vaccination program and will have been microchipped. We believe that our member breeders are the most reliable source from which to acquire your puppies, however, at a minimum any breeder should be a member of Dogs NSW (or interstate equivalent). Any breeder should be willing to guarantee that they are selling you a sound and healthy puppy as it leaves with you for it's new home at age 8 weeks or more.

Responsibilities of The Breeder

Although NSW state legislation makes micro chipping mandatory, there are exceptions to this rule (and if this is the case your breeder will explain why they have chosen not to micro chip), otherwise puppy will have been microchipped when he or she leaves with you at 8 weeks or older. Before going home with you, your Puppy will have been registered with Dogs NSW and will have been wormed. Puppy will be on heartworm preventative medication and will continue this once you take him or her home. Puppy will also have commenced his or her vaccination program which after consultation with puppy's breeder and your vet you will complete with second and third shots.

Responsibilities of the New Pet Owner

A yearly check up by your veterinarian will ensure that your new companion is happy and healthy. The breeder will be happy to provide you with information on what your puppy should eat so as puppy is furnished with all the sustenance, vitamins and minerals they require for healthy development. To keep your dog looking their best, grooming is required on a regular basis. You can learn to do this yourself or it can be done by the breeder or nearby salon. A very good grooming guide for Miniature Schnauzers is provided by Karen Brittain of Britmor Miniature Schnauzers and with Karen's permission we have provided a link to her site which also illustrates the grooming guide.

Basic obedience is very important in order that your puppy better adapt to their new home and surrounds. The Miniature Schnauzer Club of NSW recommends the puppy classes offered by Camarna Kennels in the Sydney Metropolitan area and both within and outside the Sydney metropolitan your local Vet often runs puppy socialization classes. Camarna also offers additional obedience and conformation classes for older puppies and mature dogs. These are offered in group classes or "one on one" instruction if the need is identified.

Above all, your new puppy needs love, care and affection. He can exist on a moderate amount of exercise but is happiest when he has something to do. That little dynamo or couch potato with his fun loving personality and spirit, will very, very quickly worm his or her way into your armchair and your life.
